Assessment & Evaluation

Ensuring Honest & Ethical Independent Student Work In the Context of Remote Learning

The main purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. All assessment should lead to hope; we want to promote student engagement and learning to ensure student success for the future. Educators use differentiated methods of assessments to gather evidence of how students are progressing; this is especially true as we adjust to assessing remote learning. We hope to provide feedback to students to support their continuous and ongoing learning.

With access to the internet, the ability to work together using technology, and fewer reminders that “it needs to be your own work,” students may need more support in understanding what constitutes plagiarism when completing distance learning activities. If they have concerns, your child’s teacher may contact you about an issue of plagiarism or cheating.

We see this as a learning opportunity, helping your child realize what has occurred. It’s always important to understand why a child has cheated or plagiarized; sometimes it’s unintentional because there is a lack of understanding or a lack of knowledge of how to give credit to the source. If it’s intentional, there is generally a reason for that as well. It’s important to have a conversation with your child to understand what happened and why. Here are a few links to help with that conversation and to help your child avoid plagiarism and cheating:
